What a weekend! Buckminster was first with Lady competing in the Novice Pony Club ODE area qualifier. The course was lovely, the ground the best I have rode on in a long while so light and springy on the horses feet. Lady really enjoyed her jumping her 5th double clear in a row over a show jump course that only 4 people got round clear! She flew the cross country which was one of the more technical novices we have done this year to come 4th. We just missed out on qualifying which was a shame as its always been an ambition of mine to get to the champs although it would of been fairly close to Gatcombe and she is due a nice little holiday after that until we pick her back up for the end of the season.
Quick change of horse and off we went to Frickley on Sunday! Annie was competing her second BE100 and boy was she a little star! A competitive dressage of 32.8 and her best score to date left us in a great position going into Show Jumping which was causing chaos! Annie jumped her best round EVER! She was so rideable which came at a great time as the terrain was tricky but the course was great really challenging which I enjoyed! She jumped a beautiful clear which moved us further up the leader board! Eeeekk if we could finish on our dressage she could take the win! I kept calm and didn't do anything stupid, I didn't want to rush remembering shes still only 5! I took my time at the combinations but let her go in between the fences, she was really responsive today and jumped everything spot on, We picked up 5.6 time which was a little disappointing, however when we looked on the scoreboard this was a very competitive time and I was delighted to finish 3rd! She picked up a Badminton Grassroots RF qualification for next year, and a ticket to the new Yorkshire Challenge held at Frickley again in September which I am really looking forward to! Its over a tough BE100 to maximum height and length with a championship feel to it jumping XC before Show jumping in reserve order. I can't wait!
Thank you to all the organisers and volunteers we had a great weekend the courses were brilliant. Now only a week to go until Gatcombe.
Great day eventing both the girls at Breckenbrough with 2 double clears. It was Annie's first official BE100 and boy did she step up to the plate! The course was tough and had some questions I thought would definitely test a 5yo! She warmed up well but seemed to become tense quickly in the test which did spoil some of the marks for a 37. The show jumping was a great course with lots of different lines and built well, she jumped fantastic one of her best round for a clear. We set off cross country and see was just flying round! There were questions right till the very end (see course pics) but she answered them all and inside the optimum time too! I was delighted with her first double clear at this level to finish just outside the top 10 in a competitive section. Hopefully with some more mileage on the dressage we can improve this phase quickly as she does have lovely paces.
Lady was super in the novice too. The track had changed a lot since the first event. She was rather giddy in the dressage this time, I think her concentrate was more on getting back to Annie in the horsebox so she scored a 36.3 which was fair!
Show jumping caused lots of problems with only 8 clears in the section and Lady was one of them. That is her 4th clear show jumping in a row! She really does know her job now and gives it 110% in that ring for me. We set out for cross country knowing the time was tight. She answered all the questions and was flying round, fence 9ab & B caught me out with how sharp the turn was. I had a big jump over fence 9ab so had to put the hand brake on and do a different line to fence B. Lady bless her clocked the fence and popped it from a stand still, It was always in my mind when I went for fence B not to cross my tracks so did a squiggle to avoid this, she flew round the rest of the course and I was really happy with how she went. We were waiting for prize giving as was in 8th place, however last minute my score was changed to a 20 pens which we quickly queried and asked why. The fence judge had said I crossed my tracks and unfortunately the video mum had was ''inconclusive' to prove I hadn't. This was a real shame but things happen so quickly and we paid the price!
We have another busy weekend coming up with Lady competing in the PC area ODE qualifier at Buckminster, and Annie in the 100 at Frickley which is the last event before Gatcombe! We have been working hard on the dressage test which is definitely a step up to what I have been used to doing in Novice tests. I am really looking forward to the jumping phases and Lady has been flying round Novice so will be nice to have a new challenge for the both of us.
It seems strange writing a blog to help others achieve that dream 20 something dressage test. People who know me very well will understand my frustration in this phase and the disappointment that comes with it! I have slogged away, cried, laughed and even thought for a minute to change disciplines! But I guess that's the reason I can write about how to get there, as I have been right at the bottom after dressage, I have had the 40+ scores, and I have managed to improve the horse and achieve that 23 dressage!
My Dressage Kit
Don't get me wrong its not been easy, having a horse that is naturally a good jumper rather than a flashy big moving dressage horse is the difficult part! I have battled with age, balance, time and understanding too. Its only now at 7 years old I have been able to put the pressure on her and ask for that bit more. Try not to get down about the scores, I always set in my mind if I can better my previous dressage score then I am going in the right direction. You will have set backs, you will have bad days, you will have judges that don''t particularly like the horse but it will all come together with the right trainer and time!
