Well what a cracking weekend it has been! The last time I went to Skipton Horse Trials I came back with my first red BE frilly!! I never thought I would be able to get near the 23.5 dressage I scored last time with Candy but Lady really did pull out all the stops bagging a 23!!!
Trust me it hasn't been easy, the last few events I have been really down about the dressage, she has lovely paces and is very obedient, however being a big girl she can tend to look a bit hurried in the arena and unbalanced. I am very grateful (and can't take all the credit!) for ,my trainer Claire Bennett who has spent hours and hours with us working on establishing the paces and making me more confident in asking for that extra bit of effort from Lady. We have since been able to really master the medium trot and canter which now feels amazing! So thank you Claire if you are reading this! The comments were spot on too and I loved seeing a 9 at the end!! Definitely a test for the wall.
The show jumping seemed to be causing lots of problems and when I looked back only 7 people jumped a clear round. Lady really showed her class jumping a lovely clear even with a noddy on board who dumped her right in it at the last triple! I think I saw a stride fit for a Shetland lol! On to XC and although I did get lost twice whilst working the course which is never a good sign for me (I like to have the path clearly marked and its even better if it has been post and railed so to speak!) I easily get lost so as you can imagine when travelling at speed its even harder!! The course was lovely though and the ground even better with a good grass coverage. The time I thought was fast at 4.30 and it definitely showed with only 2 people getting round inside the time allowed. Lady picked up 6.8 time faults, we were definitely flying (or at least it felt that way) its the first time I have ever lost my hat silk!! It was a very warm day so I just went with the pace she was comfortable at. I guess it didn’t help I had a blonde moment before the water wondering which gateway I went through to get to it, my 50/50 chance turned out well and I had thank goodness picked the right one, this definitely lost us a couple of seconds! Its so lovely to say she gave me a great confident run round with nothing causing her a problem, she didn’t look twice at anything. This tells me she’s ready for a challenge and what a challenge she has coming up. The following day we found out that we had qualified for the FESTIVAL OF BRITISH EVENTING CHAMPIONSHIPS! This is held at the prestigious Gatcombe Park and I will be competing in the brand new Novice Restricted Championships which sounds fantastic. Its a totally new course aimed at the amateur event rider who hasn’t competed at Intermediate for the past 5 years. It will be such a great test for both Lady & I with it being a top end Novice and 1 Star test. Let the practising, gallop training and long dressage arena prep begin!
So whats next? We’ve got the riding club team show jumping coming up to look forward to with both girls entered for it. We’ve got Breckenbrough Novice for Lady end of July and Annie’s first BE 100 debut. Then Frickley Park all being well all before Gatcombe. There is some sad news at follow after speaking to my amazing riding club team managers this afternoon I have very unfortunately had to pull both horses out of the Riding Club 3 day championships as very unlucky for me these championships and the Gatcombe championship fall on the same weekend. I am devastated to have to let my team mates down, however after discussing it long and hard with my trainers, team managers and my family it seemed the best option with Lady and myself in mind. It was so difficult to pick up a qualification and very last minute I must add, the cut off being 30th June I really didn’t expect to qualify but it has been my main ambition after they announced the new class for amateurs last year and I class myself the serious amateur.. this class was made for me! I absolutely love the riding club champs so it was very sad to have to withdraw but I am very pleased someone else will get to take my place and I’m sure be delighted. We still have the Festival of the Horse win under our belts and hopefully we can do the same in the show jumping in 2 weeks.
What an awesome day we all had competing for East Midlands Dressage Group in the Festival of the Horse Championships. It was held at Aston Le Walls, a venue I haven't been to before,. The weather picked up which was brilliant as we had to go down the night before and stay in the lorry. It was Annie's first night away from home for a competition and although she was a bit upset when Lady had to go and do her job she was really grown up and settled well.
Lady was up first, we walked the show jumping course when we arrived Friday, it was certainly different with 2 doubles on angles and 3 fences on a 20m circle which would be tight if you didn't ride it well! Lady jumped a foot perfect double clear taking all the fastest routes so we went straight out onto the cross country which was a lovely 100 course. Lady really enjoyed herself maybe a little too much as we came back 14 seconds under the optimum. Our team did fabulous not only winning best 3 scores to count, but also best 4 scores to count so EMDG were crowned 2015 FOH CHAMPS! It was so nice to be part of such a supportive team with amazing team mates and managers. We loved our lap of honour and interview with Horse & Hound watch out for it in next weeks! We are all qualified for the ODE 3 day champs in August so fingers crossed we can bring home some more silverware!
One of my favourite products is the Total Body Wash, a product they have had since the beginning and has some fantastic reviews. It can be used anywhere on the horse and should be in everyone's grooming kit. Perfect for horses with sensitive skin and works brilliantly to remove stains anywhere on the horse.
